R/W
followed the advice in the manuals:
A R/W can damage a foe from distance and then use a hammer in melee
of course specced max markmanship and hammer just to get damage >.<

Love that build in ascalon, northern shiverpeaks. Was getting tired in Kryta and Magumma, and was really sick of it in Crystal Desert.
Never went conjure because I didn't get a decent sword drop till after I could change my profession.

I do remember that W/E was a really bad-ass combo
lava font tanks had insane damage

All my characters have started out with /Mo, (except the monk). This was just for the "hard" rez - no points in any monk attribute, except "leftovers".
The first character that ever actually used a secondary was my Necro - i jacked enough points into Healing Prayers to use Heal Area on the minions.
Since then I've used /W on my Dervish just so I could use Distracting Blow and I have a W/E Obsidian Warrior (more of a warrior than a tank ).

Did it just because I thought 2 tanks, me plus a pet would be awesome! Then decided that it wasn't such a good idea and went with W/Mo.

Why only use distracting shot and savage shot when you can have power leak and spike?!?
I think I used conjure phantasm and chaos storm at one point, but soon I dropped all mesmer skills :P

I liked the Necro skills but Fast Casting looked more useful to me at first blush than Soul Reaping (with 0 skills in the line at the time) so I decided to go for a fast casting necro.
Beat the game with her and explored everywhere before there were titles for it, but with only four character slots (one for PvP means really 3 slots) and no hope in sight for more slots in the future (at the time), I gritted my teeth and deleted her in favor of a better farmer. Much regret. Wish I had her back.

Mine was R/N. I invented the Price of Failure Ranger (around the time I first got to Thirsty River - maybe a week or two after release).
Pen Atk
Savage Shot
Melandru's Arrows (added this later when I capped it)
Price of Failure
Throw Dirt
Whirling Defense
Unguent
Rez
edit: forgot Plague Touch was in there somewhere
RA was so much fun with that the first couple months.

i wanted to use blood to heal myself, i wanted a pet, and i wanted to attack with a bow as well as have OMFG cool minions.
my skill bar was like.... vamp gaze, unholy feast, demonic flesh, charm animal, comfort animal, call of protection, power shot, bone horror. not to mention points in soul reaping
overall i had like 5 or 6 each in beast mastery, marksmanship, blood magic, death magic, soul reaping. i was allways running out of energy even back before soul reaping nerf, and my damage was pretty pathetic. at least i looked pretty cool
a few months later i have transformed into an MM and at times had over 60 minions down in sorrows furnace LOL
cant beleive they nerfed that :'( minion limit ftl

My first character was a Ranger/Monk.
I started around the same time two other people I knew; one was a Warrior/Mesmer and the other was a Necromancer/Elementalist. I wanted to get the other 2 professions, so that we would be a ballanced team. I chose ranger as my primary because I heard that they had better armor, and I didn't think about the energy needed for a monk.
I put about 2/3 of my points into marksmanship and the other third into healing prayers. I don't remember my build, but I think it was more healing than anything else.
I didn't dislike my build, but I quit it because it was getting difficult getting a PUG when none of my friends were on. I decided that being a monk primary was better, so I switched to my current character (Mo/Me)

I remember reading through the first guild wars manuscript through the core 6 professions and chose necro because you steal health and i thought that would be the most useful. my expereinced friend said that was a good idea, and naturally my secondary became a monk :P

I thought the Necromancer looked cool so I made him. Then I thought the fire skills were awesome so I added those.

Stereotypical Wammo, with healing skills like mending up until a bit after Yak's bend. At that point I was having some trouble and experimented with a pure warrior build, which was a lot more successful and considerably less noobish. Think rebirth was my only monk skill after that. I absolutely loved "Watch Yourself!", since Alesia wanted to be the tank. Couldn't set henchman flags, so she'd rush in right alongside me and get owned v_v!
Later on I switched to W/R and ran an apply poison/cyclone axe build. Aw yeah.
Once I reached Droks I went for full Knight's armor, even though the damage reduction effect was global so you only needed one piece. I even knew that, I just thought it was the only decent looking armor so I got it anyways.
